DLP Marbles in Fog, 2021-07-03

LED art with scanlime — Sun, 04 Jul 2021 22:00:21 GMT

Experimenting with a technique that's new to me...

This starts with some physical setup several years ago, capturing the scanning pattern of DLPs as projected into glass beads and liquid on a large speaker we would play music and tones through.

That texture would sit around as 191557_MVI_2949.MOV for about three years until a couple days ago when I was picking up Blender after several years away, and experimenting with the new-to-me denoising engines, getting some volumetric lighting effects I previously would have been way too impatient for.

This uses a chain of 32 texture samplers set to different frames to get the light fading effects in Blender. It's a bit annoying, though I was hoping to extend it so that I can change the time offset a little bit per-pixel, for some interesting time/space distortion effects later. If not for that urge, you could get the same effect cheaper by preprocessing the video before using it as a texture.

Eyeo 2014 - Micah Elizabeth Scott

Blinky lights for STEAM – Generative light sculpture is a new art medium emerging at the intersection of fields as diverse as electronics fabrication, abstract expressionism, and neuropsychology. Micah talks about her work in using LEDs to bridge the gap between technology and art, and the potential this new medium has as an open-ended educational tool.

Presented at the Eyeo Festival (@eyeofestival) in 2014.

Eyeo 2015 – Micah Elizabeth Scott

Broken Glass – Destruction leads to emptiness, which makes room for regrowth. If you survive the process, you witness how growth starts, and begin to understand the process from a distance. My recent career transition from systems software to art and education has led me to projects that celebrate disorder paired with structure, and interaction as a feedback loop. I'll talk about two recent projects in detail, and the story behind them.

Hand made 16x9 LED matrix from 2004

LED art with scanlime — Thu, 18 Oct 2018 19:42:48 GMT

An old project, an LED matrix wired by hand and driven by a PIC16C765 processor, one of the first microcontrollers you could get with a USB interface. It was a great experience to learn USB, but ultimately it wasn't a great LED matrix compared with what's easy to build nowadays.

Music is original junk made for this, untitled.

Procedurally growing the Forest LED art installation

LED art with scanlime — Thu, 18 Oct 2018 19:19:21 GMT

Video of the strand growth and pressure simulation that resulted in the physical shape of the Forest light installation. The strands that LED light bubble up along are themselves placed by allowing many simulated forces to settle into a balance.

Forest LED art, talking about software and color/rotation sensors

LED art with scanlime — Thu, 18 Oct 2018 19:13:06 GMT

This was a production update video recorded and edited 2015-02-06, as I was working on the software and design for Forest. Explains the rotation sensing system for the interactive spinners, based on color sensors and a statistical model.

Color mixing with Forest's Circle Engine

LED art with scanlime — Thu, 18 Oct 2018 04:31:45 GMT

The "Forest" interactive LED sculpture uses a Cinder app called Circle Engine to implement the particle dynamics and LED mapping. This is a screencast of that software and how its behavior evolves over time. Near then end, you'll briefly see the color cubes used to calibrate the installation's rotation sensors. (No audio).

Ecstatic Epiphany LED Installation Preview

LED art with scanlime — Sun, 07 Oct 2018 18:18:04 GMT

Ecstatic Epiphany is an LED art installation built from a grid of edge-illuminated squares built from folded matte-board. It responds to the position and motion of viewers, acting like a window to a tiny universe that collapses and is reborn every 45 minutes or so, unfolding a bit differently each time.

Forest LED Art Installation Preview

LED art with scanlime — Sun, 07 Oct 2018 18:07:27 GMT

A collaboration between Micah Scott and the New Media program at Ryerson University's RTA School of Media.

Forest was on exhibit from March 7 through April 19 of 2015. It's made from panels of CNC-cut MDF, addressible LED strips, and movable "spinners" attached to optical angle sensors that drive the simulated bubbles of luminous fluid moving up the tendrils described by the patterns in the wall.

Music is an untitled original work.
